Roses Are Red; Violets Are Yellow, Heh, Heh...

Saw my first Pine Violet (top), Viola pinetorum, of the season at the side of North Mill Creek Road. The Wood Violets, Viola lobata, have been out for a couple of weeks and are now abundant in many places around Quincy. Saw quite a few yesterday on the Feather River College nature trail. They're out along the Old Highway, 4 miles north of Quincy off 70. Noe the similarity of the flowers, but extreme difference in the leaves. Our local species of blue-violet violet comes out much later as does the white McCloskey's Violet. There are domestic violets in many yards at this time, and they come in a wide variety of colors.
